Do restaurants pay a Pix fee?

Credit and debit card fees account for a good portion of a restaurant's operating costs. To save money, many look for other payment methods, such as Pix.

What some people don't know is that there is also a Pix fee. According to the Central Bank, this fee can be applied to both individuals and legal entities, as in the cases below:

Individuals are exempt but can be charged in the following situations:

• When making a Pix, when an in-person service channel or the institution's staff is used, including by telephone, when they are available through electronic means; and

• When receiving a Pix, in the case of a purchase purpose, in exchange for commercial activities (Example: an individual seller who receives a Pix for the sale of a product or service).

Legal entities can be charged:

• For sending and receiving funds via Pix, for the purposes of transfer and purchase;

• For contracting ancillary services related to the sending or receiving of funds via Pix that allow complementary activities to be offered specifically to businesses.

Pix fees are charged by financial institutions. However, they are not required to apply these fees. Each one can set its own charging policy and rates.

Therefore, restaurants pay a Pix fee according to the financial institution they choose. Entenda mais a seguir!

How does the Pix fee work for restaurants?

Each institution can set the amount of the Pix fee. They range from around 0.99% to 1.45% of the Pix amount. Assim, o gestor do restaurante deve avaliar as condições oferecidas por cada uma, escolhendo a que for mais vantajosa para o negócio.

Some banks have their own acquirer (card machine) and offer benefits such as fee exemption for a period, usually one year.

After that period ends, fees may be applied to the transactions made via Pix. You need to stay alert to these changes, checking which rules apply after the exemption period.

This way, you avoid these charges becoming “hidden”, since the restaurant receives the net amounts, with the fees already deducted, and can end up losing visibility of how much it's paying in Pix fees.
