A survey conducted in the United States in 2022 with 1,617 participants revealed that bars and restaurants are the favorite places for a first date. The study showed that 30.3% of respondents prefer dinner, followed by 23.7% who opt for coffee. Other options include walks, chosen by 12.3%, going out for drinks, also at 12.3%, and fun activities, with 11.1% preference.
For Gustavo Alves, owner of Kobes Emporium Bar, in Belo Horizonte, the preference comes down to factors like the safety and comfort these places provide. “Bars and restaurants are seen as safe places,” he comments.
In addition, he believes the complete experience, which includes good food, quality service, and a welcoming atmosphere, is what draws couples in for a first date.

Kobes Emporium Bar is already part of many couples' stories. “We have couples who had their first date here and today, after several years, come back with their kids, keeping the bar as a fond memory of the couple,” Gustavo shares. The emotional connection the space provides helps it become a special point in customers' memories.
Gustavo also highlights the importance of CUSTOMER SERVICE that is attentive and respectful. His team is trained to welcome couples in a cordial and discreet way.
“Good service is always charming; being attentive without being intrusive is essential for couples on a first date,” he explains, showing how caring for the customer helps make the experience more meaningful.
Karla Caroline, a production engineer who lives in Rio de Janeiro, agrees. She who met her husband at work, chose a bar they both liked for the first date.
“It's a bar that, by coincidence, we've both been going to for many years. It was the perfect setting to get to know each other outside the work environment; after all, it made us feel more at ease. It became a special place for us and we always go back,” Karla reveals.
So bars and restaurants are the setting for many stories from different couples. Whether for a romantic dinner or a casual conversation over coffee, these spaces offer not just meals, but an environment ripe for creating memories and emotional bonds.
Where couples meet
Another interesting survey conducted between 1930 and 2024 shows where couples met over the years. The study points out that in 2024, 60.76% of couples met online, which highlights the growing importance of digital platforms in forming relationships.
Next, 13.86% met through friends and 8.48% at work. Bars and restaurants still hold a significant position, with 4.91% of couples having started their stories in these places, which confirms the welcoming and safe environment these establishments offer to anyone looking for connections.
