Brazil reached a significant milestone in 2024 with the opening of 2.8 million small businesses, according to data from the Receita Federal. Among individual microentrepreneurs (MEIs), microenterprises and small businesses, the service sector stood out, accounting for 61% of new openings, totaling 1.7 million CNPJs. This sector covers segments such as bars, restaurants and other businesses focused on experience and consumption.

Economist Fabrício Leite points out that the country's economic context directly influenced this performance. “The drop in unemployment rates and the rise in income allowed people to consume more, including services such as bars and restaurants. That also gave many entrepreneurs the confidence to formalize their businesses and invest in new ones”, he says.

However, the challenges are still significant for those who decide to start a business. Huedson Miguel, owner of Meats Cerveja e Churrasco, in Rio Grande do Norte, highlights the difficulty of finding qualified labor.

“The biggest sore spot today is labor, which is often uninterested and unqualified. For those who are just starting out, finding committed professionals is crucial. On top of that, costs like rent are high and demand financial planning”, Huedson explains.

MEIs remain the protagonists of Brazilian entrepreneurship, accounting for 78% of new businesses in 2024. This figure reflects both the rise in formalization and the government's efforts to simplify processes and encourage small businesses.

“Many people who used to work independently now see advantages in going legal, which not only strengthens the economy but also increases tax collection”, Leite analyzes.

Despite the growth, experts advise caution. The pace at which new businesses open depends on maintaining economic stability and on public policies that stimulate consumption and production.

“If the political and economic environment remains favorable, this expansion is likely to continue in the coming years. However, political volatility can negatively impact this scenario, as we have already seen at other moments in our history”, the economist ponders.

For new entrepreneurs, Huedson reinforces the importance of planning and of focusing on product quality. “It's essential to bet on automation, choose strategic locations and offer something different. Consumers are looking for experiences, and good service combined with a quality product can ensure success, even in a competitive market.”

With 2024 marked by positive numbers, entrepreneurship remains a driving force of the Brazilian economy. However, structural challenges, such as professional qualification and high operating costs, reinforce the need for solid strategies to ensure that small businesses thrive and contribute to the country's development.
