Alcohol-Free Drinks: A Trend in Bars
In recent years, demand for alcohol-free drinks at bars and restaurants has grown significantly, driven in particular by consumers' rising interest in health and wellness. According to a study by Datassential, a North American research platform focused on food and beverage, the presence of “mocktails” — the name given to non-alcoholic drinks — has risen an impressive 223% on menus at establishments around the world.
In Brazil, this trend can be seen across many businesses. At Grafficca Bar, in Belo Horizonte, for instance, customers can choose from a variety of alcohol-free cocktail options. The owner of the establishment, Marilda Ribeiro, says that customer demand drove the expansion of the Menu. “Percebemos que os clientes buscavam por bebidas mais criativas, semelhantes aos coquetéis tradicionais, mas sem o álcool. Por isso, nós criamos algumas opções para agradar essas pessoas e adaptamos outras que já existiam. Assim, todo mundo consegue aproveitar”.

José Eduardo Camargo, Content and Intelligence lead at the Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants (Abrasel), reinforces that this trend is here to stay: “Consumers are increasingly looking for drink options that preserve their well-being. On top of that, customers who can't drink alcohol for some reason, such as those who are driving, often also want to enjoy a beverage that offers an experience similar to that of cocktails or beers”, he comments.
Data from a survey conducted by the international consultancy IWSR showed that, among consumers who choose alcohol-free beverages at bars and restaurants, 52% do so because they consider these options healthier, 47% because they want to cut back on alcohol, and 31% because they believe the non-alcoholic options available on the market already deliver a satisfying experience, with no need to include spirits.

Main market trends
Among the main types of drinks winning space on bar and restaurant menus, these stand out:
1. Mocktails
Mocktails are cocktails made without alcohol, but that keep all the sophistication and sensory complexity of traditional drinks. They combine ingredients such as fresh juices, artisanal syrups, fresh herbs and even foams to create a unique flavor experience. They're ideal for anyone who wants to enjoy a refreshing, flavorful drink without the effects of alcohol.
2. Flavored waters
Flavored waters have gained popularity for their simplicity and health benefits. Made with still or sparkling mineral water, they're infused with fresh fruit, aromatic herbs and spices, offering customers a natural, refreshing way to stay hydrated, as well as a light, calorie-free option.
3. Non-alcoholic beers
Non-alcoholic beers have evolved significantly in terms of flavor and variety. Brewed in a way that preserves the aroma and flavor profile of the alcoholic versions, these beers offer an alternative for those who want to enjoy beer's characteristic taste without the effects of alcohol.
These options not only meet the demand for healthier, more diverse products, but also deliver pleasant sensory experiences similar to those of alcoholic drinks, making them increasingly popular choices in these venues.
